Happy Black History Month! As we commemorate the struggles and milestones of the African-American experience in the US, we also have the opportunity to engage students around history and its connections to the present. To help you bring the celebration of Black History Month into your classroom and combine it with a little bit of writing practice, we’ve created the “Exploring African-American History” sequences for elementary, middle, and high school students!
Each sequence has a single goal with four prompts to choose from. Prompts cover a range of topics including the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. Students can also create their own prompts if they want to write about their own topic.
Ready to get started? New teachers can create an account at app.getwritable.com, go to “My Sequences” and scroll to find the “Exploring African-American History” sequence to assign it. Existing teachers can contact us and we’ll add the sequence to your account. Please let us know what you think!
