The Response to Reading Assignment Collection

We are excited to announce Writable’s newest collection, Response to Reading. This collection, created based on feedback from educators like you! Each assignment has a short reading passage, plus a prompt that asks students to target their response to specific writing skills that demonstrate comprehension of the text. 

Categorized by both grade-bands and genre, the Response to Reading Collection contains multiple fiction and nonfiction texts curated for grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and 9-12.

Each fiction collection invites students to respond to fictional texts and to develop a variety of literary analyses including a Poetry Analysis, a Historical Analysis, and a Thematic Analysis. Each assignment asks students to respond to a single reading. 

The final assignment in the collection provides a general response template, with a selection of prompts that can be paired with a reading of your choice. By completing one or more Response to Fiction assignments, students gain practice analyzing readings and demonstrating their understanding of these fictional texts.

The nonfiction collection invites students to respond to nonfiction texts and to demonstrate comprehension in a variety of ways including summarizing, analyzing, and synthesizing texts. The assignments ask students to respond either to a single reading or to analyze a set of readings. 

The final assignment in the collection provides a general informational response template, with a selection of prompts that can be paired with a nonfiction reading of your choice. By completing one or more Response to Nonfiction assignments, students gain practice analyzing texts and demonstrating their understanding of these nonfiction readings.
