Writable Joins HMH

Today marks a significant milestone for Writable as we proudly announce that Writable will join Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH). This move signifies the next step in a long-running collaboration with HMH, and a move to further empower the educators we serve across 16,000 schools and districts. Our mission continues unchanged to work with you to grow great writers through supporting authentic feedback that drives deeper understanding and revision. We have long realized that teachers’ time is the most valuable resource in any classroom, and everything we have built – from our scaffolded assignments and customization tools to our leading suite of human- and AI-driven feedback tools – is aimed at saving teachers’ time and scaling their impact on student thinking and communication skills.

As we transition to the HMH family, every member of the Writable team that you have come to know will continue supporting and building our research-driven, award-winning literacy program. You will continue to work with the customer success, sales, and live chat team members who advocate for and support your needs. Now complemented by HMH’s wealth of experience, we will be able to bring you deeper innovation, enriched curriculum and content, and unparalleled professional learning opportunities.

Whether you already work with Writable alongside an HMH program such as Into Literature or Into Reading, or you prefer to purchase and use Writable as a standalone solution, Writable customers will continue to receive the support, service, and innovation they have come to expect and love.

Additionally, Writable will become the team behind HMH Labs, a new incubation team focused on the development and customer experience of emerging technologies, including generative AI. After early experimentation with AI solutions starting in 2018, we deepened our commitment to innovating with generative AI after the launch of OpenAI’s initial GPT 3.5 release. Using generative AI to re-imagine lesson prep and provide teachers with AI feedback and scoring suggestions, we have become a leader in both developing and refining AI solutions as the needs of our customers evolve. As we imagine how AI will help transform learning in the next few years, we commit to taking a teacher-focused approach to continuously improve the quality of AI support we provide educators.

True to our mission, we will continue to focus on enabling writing as one of the most authentic ways of understanding and measuring what a student knows, and as a means for teachers to build thinking and revision skills, which we believe will be the foundation of AI-era education. We look forward to your continued collaboration and we welcome any questions or feedback you may have at hmh@writable.com.

Warmly,

Heidi Perry, Co-founder
