Back to School with AI: What Educators are Saying About Writable and HMH AI Tools After ISTE 2025

As teachers head back to school this fall, many are bringing fresh inspiration from ISTE 2025. One of the biggest themes? AI tools that actually support instruction—without adding to the workload. At Writable, we’re excited to help educators kick off the year with AI that’s built for teaching and learning.

Writable at ISTE: A Session That Sparked Ideas

Educators Katherine Beals and Alicia Meador from Warren County, KY shared how Writable’s AI tools are transforming writing instruction. Their district saw writing proficiency jump from 22% to 77% in just three years—and AI played a key role in making that growth sustainable.

“I used to grade 100 papers by hand,” Katherine shared. “Now I use AI to generate feedback aligned to my rubric. I can give quality feedback to all 30 students in one day.”

Writable’s AI insights group students by rubric item performance and generate personalized comments. “I can hand a script to a parent volunteer and run a small group,” Katherine added. “It’s like having a co-teacher during writing time.”

Students are also more engaged. “They can self-evaluate, get anonymous peer feedback, and revise—all in one place,” Katherine said. “They’re excited to show their work.”

AI Tools on HMH Ed: Supporting Teachers Across Subjects

Beyond Writable, educators at ISTE were also excited about the new AI Tools from HMH. Built by the team behind Writable, these tools are designed to support differentiation, equity, and instructional impact across subjects.

“What’s really cool about the AI tools in HMH is that they’re already aligned to my curriculum,” said Katherine. “It needs a lot less input from me compared to outside AI tools.”

Teachers emphasized how the tools help meet the needs of diverse learners. “None of my students are typical,” Katherine said. “The vocabulary scaffold and text translator help me get all students to a place of readiness so they can access the curriculum.”

For multilingual learners, the tools offer real-time support. “We have a lot of EL students who struggle,” said Kendahl Broyles, a 3rd grade teacher from Warren County, KY. “I’m excited to be able to put content in their home language and make extra questions to support their learning.”

Saving Time and Boosting Impact

Back-to-school season is busy—and AI is helping teachers manage their time more effectively. “It generated a lesson plan that would’ve taken me a week—in 30 seconds,” said Tiffany Jackson, an elementary school teacher from Mobile County, AL. “That’s amazing for time management.”

“I was burnt out trying to meet the needs of a diverse class,” Katherine added. “These tools save hours on the back end and let me focus on what matters—teaching.”

What District Leaders Are Saying

District leaders are more familiar with AI as we head into a new school year, and are prioritizing tools that align with instructional goals, protect student data, and reduce platform fatigue.

Sessions also highlighted how AI can close opportunity gaps by automating differentiation and providing real-time insights. As AI tools evolve, professional learning must evolve too. Districts are investing in PD that helps teachers design lessons that foster creativity, productive struggle, and higher-order thinking.
